Flare Help & Support

Answers to common questions, and how to reach us · Emberline Industries Inc.

Flare doesn't contact emergency services. It alerts the people you've chosen. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number.

How to

Get set up (your first five minutes)
  1. Open Contacts and tap + Add contact. Add at least one Emergency contact (they get your SOS) and one Check-in contact (they get I Feel Unsafe and missed check-ins).
  2. Each person gets an invitation, and shows as "Waiting for them to accept" until they do. They get nothing from you before then.
  3. Open More → Settings and look at the Setup Check. Tap Fix on anything that isn't ticked.
  4. Once someone has accepted, open More → Practice Mode and tap Send Practice Alert to check it reaches them. It's clearly marked as practice.
  5. On Android, add the home screen widget (see below).
Send an SOS, and cancel one
  1. On Home, press and hold SOS until the ring fills (3 seconds). A quick tap does nothing.
  2. Your Emergency contacts are told straight away, with your location, and can follow it live.
  3. Home shows "SOS sent to your contacts" while it's active. Tap View details to see who has responded.
  4. To cancel, press and hold anywhere on that tile. If App Lock is on, Flare asks for your fingerprint or PIN first.
Use I Feel Unsafe
  1. On Home, tap I Feel Unsafe. It goes to your Check-in contacts, with your location.
  2. Home shows "Alert sent to your Check-in circle".
  3. When you're fine, tap I'm OK. Your contacts are told.
  4. If it becomes an emergency, press and hold Send SOS. Your Emergency contacts are told too.
Set up a Plan and check in
  1. On Home, tap Plan, then choose Fixed Plan.
  2. Choose where you'll be, and when you'll check in.
  3. Under If missed, notify, choose who's told if you don't check in. Your Check-in contacts are the default.
  4. Tap Start plan. You'll get a reminder before your check-in time.
  5. Running late? Open the plan and tap Extend time.
  6. When you're safe, tap I'm safe. If you haven't by the check-in time, the people you chose are told once, with your last known position.
Head To somewhere
  1. On Home, tap Head To, or one of your pinned destinations.
  2. Pick where you're going and how you're getting there. Flare shows when you're expected.
  3. Tap Start tracking.
  4. When you arrive, Flare asks you to check in. Tap I'm safe on the notification, or open the plan and tap I'm safe.
  5. If you haven't checked in by the time you're expected, your contacts are told.
Share your location with Follow Me
  1. Tap Follow Me on Home (it's in More too).
  2. Under Who, pick the people who can see you. Under For how long, choose a time.
  3. Tap Start sharing. They're told, and can open your live location.
  4. It keeps going with your phone in your pocket and stops by itself when the time's up. To stop early, tap Stop next to a name, there or in Privacy & Sharing.
Set up and send an Escape Plan
  1. In Contacts, tap Escape under someone's name to make them an Escape Contact. They need to accept.
  2. Set your usual excuse once, in More → Settings → Default Escape Message.
  3. When you need a way out, tap Escape Plan on Home. Choose the Mode (a call or a text), Who and When, then tap Send request.
  4. For one-tap sending, tap Escape in the bottom bar, then + New favourite, and pin up to two to Home.
Add the home screen widget (Android; iPhone is coming later)
  1. Press and hold an empty spot on your home screen, tap Widgets, find Flare, and drag a widget where you want it.
  2. There are two sizes: the full bar has SOS, I Feel Unsafe and your pinned Escape favourites; the small one (Flare SOS & Unsafe) has just SOS and I Feel Unsafe.
  3. SOS opens Flare, where you hold the SOS button as usual. A tap on the widget never sends an SOS.
  4. I Feel Unsafe sends straight away, after a 5-second Undo notification. While it's live, the button turns into I'm OK.
  5. On the full widget, your pinned Escape favourites send the same way. Neither widget ever shows names or numbers.
When someone adds you as their contact
  1. You get an invitation. Open More → People I Support and tap Accept (or Decline).
  2. When they send an alert, you get a notification. Tap I'm on it so they know someone is responding.
  3. Tap Follow live location to see where they are while the alert is going.
  4. To stop being someone's contact, open People I Support and tap Remove myself. They're told.
Manage your account
  1. New phone number: Profile → Change number. A code is sent to the new number to confirm it.
  2. Lost phone: sign in on another phone, then Profile → Sign Out Other Devices.
  3. Delete your account: Profile, or More → Privacy & Sharing, then Delete Account. A code is sent to your phone to confirm.

Common questions

How do I send an SOS?

Press and hold SOS on Home for 3 seconds, until the ring fills. A quick tap never sends one. Your Emergency contacts are told straight away, with your location, and they can follow it live until the alert ends. To cancel, press and hold the SOS tile the same way.

What's the difference between I Feel Unsafe and SOS?

I Feel Unsafe is for when something feels wrong but isn't an emergency yet. It's a single tap, and it goes to your Check-in contacts. SOS is for an emergency and goes to your Emergency contacts, the smaller group you trust most. Holding SOS during an I Feel Unsafe alert turns it into an SOS.

Does Flare call 911?

No. Flare alerts the people you've chosen; it doesn't contact emergency services. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number.

Why hasn't my contact been getting my alerts?

Nobody gets your alerts until they've accepted your invitation. In Contacts, anyone still showing "Waiting for them to accept" hasn't yet. Once they have, use Practice Mode to send a test alert that's clearly marked as practice.

What happens if I miss a check-in?

Your Check-in contacts, or the people you picked for that Plan, are told once, with your last known position. Flare never escalates it to your Emergency contacts on its own. You'll get a reminder before your check-in time, and you can extend it from the Plan if you're running late.

Who can see my location?

Only the people an alert went to, or the people you've shared Follow Me with, and only while that's going on. During a Plan, Flare records an approximate position every 2 minutes, which your contacts only see if you miss your check-in. In the app, Privacy & Sharing shows everything being shared right now. See the privacy policy for the details.

What is an Escape Plan?

A discreet way out of an uncomfortable situation. It asks one of your Escape Contacts to call or text you with an excuse to leave, now or in a few minutes. It never sends an alert. Set your usual excuse once in Settings, and pin favourites to Home for one-tap sending.

My reminders or alerts arrive late.

Your phone may be pausing Flare in the background to save battery. In the app, open Settings and run the Setup Check: it shows anything that needs fixing, with a Fix button for each. On some phones (Samsung, for example) also check that Flare isn't in the "Sleeping apps" list under Battery.

I lost my phone.

Sign in to Flare on another phone with your number, then go to Profile and tap Sign Out Other Devices. The lost phone is signed out and stops getting your alerts.

I have a new phone number.

Go to Profile and tap Change number. Everything tied to your account moves to the new number. People who added you as their contact will need to update your number on their side.

How do I delete my account?

In the app, go to More, then Privacy & Sharing, then Delete Account. The privacy policy explains exactly what's deleted and what's kept.

Text messages

Flare sends text messages (SMS) only to people who have asked for them:

How often you get texts depends on how often codes are requested or alerts are sent; there's no marketing and no regular schedule. Message and data rates may apply.

Reply STOP to any Flare text to stop receiving them, or HELP for help. After STOP, contacts who have the app still get alerts as app notifications; to stop those too, remove yourself as a contact in the app. Flare never sells or shares phone numbers for marketing; see the privacy policy.
